In games, the processor does not draw the frames — it prepares them. It sets the smoothness floor: those notorious 1% most demanding scenes where a barely-adequate CPU drags everything down. That is why models with stacked 3D cache dominate this ranking: the extra cache keeps game data right next to the cores, and the gap shows most in competitive play. Under 400 €, two strategies both make sense: staying on AM4 to upgrade an existing machine at low cost, or moving to a recent platform to keep a path open toward future generations. Every product page states the TDP: above 105 W, plan for real cooling — a large air cooler or an AIO. The ranking only keeps processors in stock, ordered by performance at today's prices. Rule of thumb on coolers: 65 W models run fine on their stock cooler for everyday use, while unlocked chips deserve better from day one.

How this ranking is computed
This ranking's index weighs gaming performance, not application performance: cache — especially stacked 3D cache — counts more than core count, and frequency only arbitrates after that. A 16-core chip with no gaming advantage does not overtake an 8-core with big cache. In-stock models only, at today's prices.
Limitations to keep in mind
The higher the resolution, the less the CPU matters: at 4K, the graphics card almost always caps the FPS, and two processors from this ranking can end up even there. Manufacturer figures also say nothing about thermal behavior in YOUR case. An independent FPS bench remains to be added.

The pure gamer can aim for the top-tier 3D-cache chips: a few extra FPS in competitive 1080p, but gains that melt as resolution climbs — at 4K, the graphics card decides almost alone. The creator, however, truly gains: editing, 3D rendering and simultaneous streaming benefit from the high core counts that games leave unused.
