An air cooler is chosen on the heat it can remove, compared with the heat of the processor. The manufacturer states it in watts: a model rated for 245 W easily cools a recent Ryzen 7 or Core i5, whereas a small 150 W cooler is enough for a 65 W processor. Dual-tower models with two fans dominate this ranking: more fin surface, so the same heat removed at a lower, quieter fan speed. Height is the second criterion, and it is a deal-breaker: a 160 mm cooler does not fit every case, and it can get in the way of tall memory modules. How this ranking is computed
The index ranks by rated heat removal (supported TDP); at equal capacity, the shorter model comes first, because it fits more cases. Only air coolers in stock are ranked, at catalogue prices; liquid coolers have their own section.
Limitations to keep in mind
Manufacturers' TDP ratings are not measured to a common standard: between two brands, the real gap can be smaller or larger than the stated one. Noise is not scored. Colour variants of the same model count as one. Prices and stock are today's.
